John J Cotter


Professional background

John was admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales in 1973 and in Federal Jurisdictions in 1974.
 
For many years, John has practised primarily as a property and finance solicitor. In 1995 he achieved accreditation as a specialist in Property Law.  John’s experience covers minor leasing or acquisition matters to multi-million dollar development projects. John has an in-depth knowledge of property and finance Law and an excellent understanding of the tax issues relating to property transactions. John is also Chair of Champion Financial Limited.

 

Current Practice
John is a Director and heads up our busy Property and Finance team providing services to a predominantly developer-based clientele specialising in major property transactions and finance, while still looking after the interests of the firm’s established family of clients.

 

 
His recent work has included:

 

  • Advising major institutions and government agencies on the purchase, compulsory acquisition or sale of properties;
  • Advising a major developer on the tax implications of what they were planning to do and, in the process, saving that company nearly $1 million in tax.
  • On behalf of a large government department arranging the successful purchase of a substantial piece of land (valued at $25 million) where the exchange and completion of sale was required within 72 hours of having received instructions;
  • Advising a corporate land-owner of the impact that an easement would have on future development and successfully negotiating the acquisition of this easement;
  • The creation of an easement for a motorway for major electrical services;
  • The $10 million refinance of company assets for a developer involving multiple securities.
