We are very pleased to advise that Dr Bernard Carey has joined Champion Legal to provide further depth and experience to help us better assist and support our growing business and commercial clients.
Bernard, as he prefers to be known, graduated with a Bachelor of Laws, first class honours, from the University of Sydney in 1991. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy (1987) and a Bachelor of Arts, first class honours (1975), both also from the University of Sydney.
Bernard brings with him a wealth of experience. He has served in numerous academic positions both in Australia and overseas, most recently as visiting Professor at the Law School University College Dublin. His other more recent positions include Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business and Law) at the University of Newcastle, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) at the University of Western Sydney and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Macquarie University.
At Macquarie University Bernard was an integral part of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM), joining as Director of Academic Programs in 1985 and then as Managing Director from 1991 to 1996.
His experience also includes two years as Chief Executive Officer of Outlook Media Ltd, editorial experience on a number of management and law journals and an active role in the change management process at the University of Western Sydney as it moved from a member-based to an integrated university in the late 1990’s. Bernard was one of the drivers behind the University establishing the Sydney Graduate School of Management.
In 1990 he won the Minter Ellison Prize for intellectual property and was Chair of the Sydney Law Review. He has also won several prizes for his work on public management. Bernard is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management. He is particularly interested in the areas of alternative dispute resolution, business and government law and business ethics.
“Bernard brings with him a unique blend of skills and qualifications,” said Champion Legal Chairman Geoffrey Roberson, “he takes a strategic management view, in addition to considering the legal implications when dealing with our clients and their issues. This assists us in continuing to deliver real business and legal solutions to our clients, not just from the point of the law, but also from the realistic and practical application of these solutions.”
Bernard enjoys walking and reading, probably not at the same time, and is an avid collector of fountain pens and rare bank notes. When you get the chance to meet him, be sure to ask him about his latest pen acquisition!
